OpenAI has announced a major milestone for its flagship chatbot, ChatGPT, which now processes 2.5 billion user prompts daily across the globe. The figure, reported by Axios and confirmed by OpenAI, marks a 150% surge in usage since December 2024, when the platform was handling around 1 billion daily queries.
With over 500 million weekly active users, the majority still using the free version, ChatGPT's growth reflects the rapid mainstream adoption of AI tools. The U.S. contributes approximately 330 million prompts daily, while India leads in mobile app adoption and usage, emerging as a key growth market.
Notably, ChatGPT now handles about one-fifth of Google’s daily search volume, which is estimated at 14–16 billion queries. Unlike traditional search engines, ChatGPT provides direct, conversational responses—offering summaries, explanations, and even help with writing and coding. This makes it especially popular among students using the tool as a virtual tutor.
OpenAI is also looking beyond just a chatbot. The company is reportedly developing a browser powered by AI to compete with Chrome and has launched the ChatGPT Agent, a tool capable of autonomously performing tasks on users' computers.
CEO Sam Altman has reiterated OpenAI’s commitment to making AI widely accessible, especially for learners and digital users worldwide.
